Next Week Will Be 4 Months

Okay... so I couldn't resist putting a picture of Kim Kardashian and I together in Miami a couple weeks ago. (I know that the site got lots of hits when Sharon Stone's picture was up.) Incidentally, the answer to your question about Kim Kardashian is, NO, it's not as big as it is portrayed in the media. Not only is she beautiful, but she was wonderful to work with.
So it's almost 4 months since my treatment. The amount of hair on my once barren head is definitely increasing. I would not yet describe myself as having a full head of hair but people do stop outside my office on a regular basis and comment on the hair growth. I continue to have minor skin irritations as the new hairs try to break through the surface of the scalp. I have again found that my hair is growing faster then it did before I started using Dr. Jones' Scalp Treatment and taking Avodart.
On cold days like this I look forward to having the amount of hair that will keep me warmer outside! Scroll back through the blogs and I think you will agree that the hair replacement is starting to show significant progress.

Next Week Will Be Three Months

Okay, I leave it up to you. I submit for your approval a before and an almost 3 months after shot. Dr. Jones saw my head last night and he said he was "optimistic" with the progress. I must admit there appears to be a significant difference. I'm not yet ready to start carrying a comb but, my Barber has suggested that he may soon have to start charging me full price for my haircuts! The most interested observer is a young guy in my office who has male pattern baldness. I won't tell you his name but everyone else in the office is a female and they appear to still have a full head of hair. If you rub your hand across the top of my head (if you are female you are welcome to do this at any time and if you are male it just doesn't look good)you can feel a very light stubble breaking through. I was recently introduced to a gentleman who was at the four month post operative stage. I was optimistic when I saw his progress. The perceived progress over the last month or so has been insignificant and I'm looking forward to having to be concerned about the wind messing my hair. I should also tell you that I am also experiencing a regular occurrence of scalp irritations like pimples as the hairs try to break through the scalp. These are a bit of a bother but, apparently, good news. The balding guy in my office says they are hardly noticeable. I think Dr. Jones has at least one potential new client.

The New Spinning Room

So the day has arrived. Last night I had the opportunity to show Dr. Jones first hand what his donation of a hair transplant accomplished for Appleby College. Physical Education teacher, Doug Buchanan (who may yet be a future candidate for Dr. Jones's services)and I had the opportunity to show Rob our new spinning room. The bikes are going to be a great addition to our school! The room has 21 state-of-the-art bikes so a class of 20 can work with an instructor. New hair will soon be on my head and now the opportunity to loose some weight and get fit.

Five Weeks Out

It has been just over 5 weeks since my surgery. As you can see from the photos attached there is some regrowth taking place. Dr. Jones tells me that I should really not expect any significant change for two more months but I am starting to feel optimistic that this hair transplant thing might just work.

As many of you know this transplant was really a fundraiser for the school I work at. It was the opposite of shave your head for charity. The proceeds from the fundraising went to the establishment of a new spinning room for the students. The bikes arrived this week and they should be in place for the start of school on Monday. It is going to be a great addition to the school.

Almost Three Weeks

It has been almost three weeks since my transplant surgery. My head looks fairly sparse again. Most of the new hair has fallen out and I am starting to have some worries about it growing in once again. (I guess that's a normal fear). As I told you before, I am applying Dr. Jones' scalp treatment each day. The directions tell me to rub the solution into my scalp with the soft part of my hand for 1-2 minutes until it has been completely absorbed. The solution is supposed to encourage the regrowth of hair. Here is my sick thought for the day...If this solution is going to encourage hair growth, how am I going to explain the hair on my palm that I use to rub it in? What will my mother think?!

Day 17

As promised, here are a couple of pictures of my head as of this morning. The pictures are a bit unforgiving from the angle they were taken from. There actually is a light covering of hair; a combination of the implanted hairs and the hair I actually had on my head when this process started. The scalp is well healed but there continues to be a consistent dryness and light scabbing. I am very reluctant to go out in the sun without my hat on as I think the top of my head would be very sensitive to the sun at this point. The numbness is starting to go away. Yesterday, I went to see my Barber. He trimmed the sides and back so they would blend in with the top better. He told me he might have to charge me more come Christmas when my new hair hair grown back in. I hope he feels compelled to do so.

Day 15

So yesterday was my Birthday. I guess the people at Appleby bought me a new head of hair for my Birthday. Unfortunately, the present is a little belated. It will be like a Birthday/Christmas present. I have two kids that were born at Christmas time who always feel ripped off when some relatives try to give them a combined gift. I think I'm due to attach a new photo of my head, so I will try to do that tomorrow.

Day 13

It has been almost two weeks since I had my surgery. The scabs are all gone. My head continues to be numb. (No that is not a type-o. I did say numb and not dumb) It appears that the transplanted hair is starting to thin out as I was told it would. I have started to apply a daily treatment of Dr. Jones Scalp Treatment as well I have been put on a daily dose of Avodart. Both products are supposed to stimulate regrowth of the hair. I would assume some people who wore a hair piece prior to their hair transplant just continue to wear the piece during the next few months of the process. As soon as my donor site incision heals up just a little bit more, I'm just going to cut my hair shorter so the contrast between the sides and top is not so significant. In the mean time I continue to wear my hat in public. It's not really because I look too bad, I always did, it is just because most people who know I had the procedure think that I should already have a full head of hair blowing in the wind. Dr. Jones is a doctor not a miracle worker!

Day 10

I had my stitches taken out today. As expected, (I've had lots of stitches)this was a quick and painless process. I was told that I can take showers as usual and I can rub the top of my head in the shower to speed up the process of the falling away of the scabs. Once the scabs are all gone, Dr. Jones has asked me to apply his scalp treatment once a day, before I go to bed for at least a year. Now the bad news for family and friends. The hair that has been transplanted will fall out and then it will gradually grow back in. Dr. Jones tells me that I should expect to have an almost full head of hair by Christmas. That reminds me of a contractor who built our family cottage and promised to have it ready for Christmas. Unfortunately, he never told me what Christmas! I'm fairly confident Dr. Jones means this Christmas. I'll keep you posted.

August 6

Not much to tell you today. The scabs continue to slowly flake away. I'm going up to the Rugby club tonight so I can hardly wait for the reaction of some of the people who have seen the blog. I think I'm going to catch some abuse. Tomorrow I go see Dr. Jones to get my stitches removed so I'm sure there will be more pictures to upload.

August 5

So I have been told that the videos from my surgery are going up on-line today. I have had a quick look and I'm afraid I come across as your slow cousin. I think I was more nervous about the procedure then I let on. You don't have to worry, they cut out all the nasty parts where I have the strip cut from the back of my head and any blood. You don't get to see me crying like a baby either.

I'm back in the office today but I'm wearing my hat. The head does not look really good today because the scabs are drying out and falling away. People continue to be amazed with the hair on my head.

August 4

I went to church yesterday and wondered if it is appropriate to leave your hat on during the service. It is one of those new trendy churches with lots of music, lights and audio visual effects. When the Pastor came out in his collarless t-shirt and cargo shorts I decided it would be just fine to leave my hat on if I wanted. The scabs are starting to dry up and flake away.

I'm glad I didn't sit in front of my sister at church because she has a real issue with picking scabs and I don't think that would be a good idea.

I continue to soak my head for twenty minutes twice a day. I've not had 40 minutes to myself in many years. I'm thinking about asking the Dr. if I should continue the soaking sessions for another year!

August 3rd

Some people have started to find the blogs concerning my hair transplant surgery and there are friends and family who are concerned about the condition of my face as evidenced by the pictures that appear with the blog.
I told everyone that there was little or no pain, but my face looks like I was just in a battle for my life. Here is the explanation...while you are having the donor strip removed from the back of your head you lie face down with your face in a hole in the head cushion similar to that used by a message therapist. My face, as evidenced by the pictures, is larger than the average sized face and most of the pressure of the weight of my head was placed squarely on my cheeks. As a result, the red blotches were a temporary condition and no, I was not beaten by the good Doctor.

I finished my prescribed antibiotics today. I carefully applied a little shampoo to the sides and back of my head avoiding any contact with the grafts. As promised the strange numbness on the top of my head is still noticeable and it continues to feel like I'm wearing a baseball cap even when I'm not. I get my stitches out on Thursday and I plan on going to see my Barber to see if he can do any magic to reduce the length of the sides and back so the short hairs on top are less pronounced.

August 2

I took the kids out for dinner at The Olde Spaghetti Factory last night. They seemed to be very relieved when we were given a very private booth and they told me I was permitted to remove my hat. They laughed at me when they were convinced that the waitress took a double take when she saw my head. I don't think she even noticed.

I went for a long walk last night and the exercise did not seem to have any adverse affect. When I woke up this morning I realized that the scabbing is becoming very dark and I would expect that in the next day or so the scabs will start to fall off. Unlike most people who have a hair transplant, lots of people are aware of my surgery. As a result, many people ask me to remove my hat and show them Dr. Jones’ work. Without fail, I get the same reaction from everyone who observes my head. First, they want to know if it hurt and then they all comment that it looks much better than they thought it would so soon after surgery. They are amazed that the stitches for the donor site can’t even be seen. I really want to wash my hair. That is the one thing I can hardly wait to do.

Day 4

Now I'm really keen to get the stitches out of my donor site so that I can do something to even out my hair cut a little bit. I continue to soak my head twice a day in the tub. The top of my head still has a numb feeling and the scabbing is starting to become obvious. I can hardly wait to be able to wash my hair; the soaking feels good but a good shampoo would be a great treat at this point. I'm planning on getting some exercise for the first time since the surgery.

Day Three

I slept well last night. I also had my first glass of wine since a couple days prior to surgery. I have been carefully touching my head to see what it feels like. There is still a very strange numbness on the top of my head but each of the hairs feel very sharp; much different then my old head. I'm starting to wonder how long it will be until I will feel comfortable enough to remove my hat in public. Most of the itchy feeling across the back of my head has gone away.

Day 2

I dropped by to see Dr. Jones yesterday and he told me that the second night would be the last I would have to sleep in my chair and that it would be the most uncomfortable night.

As the first day continued the only thing that really started to bother me was the itchy feeling at my donor site stiches. I soaked in the tub twice yesterday and my teenage children laughed at me with visions of me lying in the tub.

We went out for dinner and I think the kids were pleased when we were given a very private table so I could remove my hat. Once again, they laughed at me when they were convinced the waitress took a double take when she saw my head. I think it was their imagination.

I still have not used any of the pain killers Dr. Jones prescribed. I just grew up in a household that did not use medication and I don't think I would describe anything I'm feeling as pain.

What I really want to do is wash my hair! Dr. Jones was right; I didn't sleep very well and I woke up regularly with discomfort. Again, I wouldn't describe it as pain just itchy.

Day 1 Post Op

I woke up early and really felt pretty good. My chronically stiff neck felt looser than normal; one of benefits of sleeping in an upright position. I'm really surprised that I have not yet experienced any real pain. I'm hoping the prescription for #3s Dr. Jones gave me will be unnecessary. I soaked in the bath for 20 minutes and then went into my office to do a few things.

Surgery Day

I went through with it! I was really concerned about the day but in the end I think it was almost everything Dr. Jones and his staff promised it would be. It was a long day. I arrived just after 7:00 am and Dr. Jones and one of his staff members were already preparing for my procedure. I signed a release form and almost immediately I was lying on my stomach preparing for what I had been told was the toughest part of the day. A 1.6 cm strip of scalp was to be cut from the back of my head. No matter how you sugar coat it, that sounds nasty. The needles for freezing do sting but the process was over quickly. I could feel some tugging and pressure as my strip was removed and the stiches were inserted but there was no pain or discomfort. My only advice for anyone who is getting the surgery is to be sure you lift up the sterile sheets to be get some cool air into your breathing space as you lie face down.

After the strip was removed Dr. Jones trimmed what hair there was on top of my head and mapped out his plans for my head with a black sharpie. A short period of discomfort followed as my head was frozen for the implantation. As two staff members arrived to start seperating the hairs for implantation Dr Jones started to poke holes in my head to receive the follicles. No pain, just a strange feeling.

Dr. Jones turned the proceedure over to two of his attendants at that point. I watched 3 great movies as 3500 follicles were implanted. There was no real dicomfort during this process but as the freezing came out you needed to speak up so more could be injected. Again the famaliar sting during injection was my favourite part of the day.

My proceedure finished at about 6:00 pm and I was cleaned up and sent on my way with a very loose fitting hat and post op instructions.

I went home, fielded the calls from my family, friends and colleagues who knew what I was doing. I made a simple dinner for the kids and sat down in my favourite chair to watch t.v. No pain assoiciated with the surgery I just feel like I have a very tight ball cap on. I kept reaching up to remove my nonexistent hat.

I slept in my chair and had little or no trouble getting a good night's sleep

A little background

A little background on how this all came about. Dr. Jones is a parent at Appleby College a coed indenpendent school in Oakville, ON. I work at Appleby and I serve as the Auctioneer at the school's Gala Auction. This year Dr. Jones generously donated a full hair transplant to the school Gala but he was concerned that no one would publically bid on an item that many people consider a private matter. At some point it became a suggestion that as a special fundraiser the crowd could work together to "buy Don hair". What began as a joke, soon became a serious proposal. If the crowd could raise $25,000 for a new spinning room for the school, I would submit to a hair transplant. There is no way I would have ever considered doing this on my own but the situation just presented the opportunity and I fell into it. So thanks to my Appleby "friends" the school has a new spinning room and I have a date with Dr. Jones.

These are photos before the hair transplant.
